Buying a mattress is not fun. There is no other way to put it. No one wakes up in the morning and says WOW I am going to go to Pottstown Mattress and buy a bed…LOL.
The reality is that we delay buying a new bed until we literally can’t sleep anymore. That delay is usually measured in years. Meaning we delay the inevitable for several years past the life of a mattress.
There are several ways that can help you identify when it is time to buy a new mattress. Here are some tips from John the owner of Pottstown Mattress:
1. If your mattress is more than 10 years old it’s time to buy a new mattress. While your mattress might physically last 2 or 3 decades it wasn’t designed to be comfortable for that long. The “Comfort Life” (time the bed is comfortable) is typically 7-10 years IF you bought a good mattress.
2. If you wake up sore. If your muscles and bones hurt in the morning when you wake up it is time to buy a new mattress. You can’t sleep well if your mattress is uncomfortable.
3. If your bed is lumpy it’s time to buy a new mattress. A lumpy mattress isn’t going to fix itself. You might be tempted to buy a mattress topper but putting lipstick on a pig doesn’t make it any better. Putting a topper on your lumpy mattress doesn’t fix the problem and it just wastes money. A good topper will cost you $150-$200 anyway, why not just put that money toward a good quality new mattress? Your back and muscles will thank you!
4. If your springs make noise when you move around or get into bed it is time to buy a new mattress. Noisy springs are a good indicator that your springs are worn out. The mattress will probably sag if the springs are noisy and it won’t be comfortable.
5. If you toss and turn at night your mattress is usually too hard. This could be because you bought the wrong one or the foam on your mattress just might be worn out and compressed down. Either way if you toss and turn that is because you aren’t comfortable and your brain is telling your body to move to get more comfortable at night.
6. If you wake up tired it is time to get a new mattress. You spec 1/3 of your life in bed. You need good quality sleep to get you through the day. If you wake up tired that means you aren’t sleeping well. This can be caused by many things, one of which is an uncomfortable worn out mattress.
7. If your mattress sags in the middle it is time to buy a new one. Sagging is typically caused by weak springs. Did you skimp a little when you bought it? Did you buy a cheaper one or maybe someone gave you their old one? Either way sagging mattresses are not comfortable and it isn’t providing you the support that you need for a good night sleep.
John at Pottstown Mattress says “if you aren’t getting a good night sleep you can’t be at the top of your game during the day”.
